Korean War Veterans Association
Dear Editor,
I write to congratulate the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) upon, at long last, receiving their charter from the federal government. During my tenure in the Maryland General Assembly I have been proud to work with the KWVA on numerous projects including the dedication of Maryland Route 43, the construction of signs on that highway honoring the service of American service members in Korea.
In 2006, I had the honor of working with the KWVA as the prime sponsor of Senate Joint Resolution 8 which urged Maryland's Congressional Delegation and all members of Congress to support a bill granting a federal charter to the organization. The successful federal legislation, S.1692, was signed into law on June 30, 2008 by President Bush. The importance of this formal recognition is that it allows the KWVA to fully participate on veterans’ advisory panels and select groups with other congressionally-chartered veterans’ and military organizations. In addition, it gives the organization greater clout when working on behalf of its members for their deserved veterans’ benefits.
Again, I say congratulations to the brave men and women who have served to protect the Korean peninsula from Communist aggression, both during active fighting in the 1950s and during the decades since. Your day of recognition has come at last!
