Senator Klausmeier Attends MD-43 Extension Ribbon Cutting and Memorial Sign Unveiling
Baltimore County- Senator Kathy Klausmeier (D-8th District) attended the ribbon cutting Monday, October 23 for the extension to Maryland State Highway 43. Dubbed "The Road to Opportunity", the extension links Martin Airport and Eastern Boulevard to the area surrounding White Marsh Town Center. The commercial and industrial development being built along this corridor is expected to add 10,000 new jobs to the Eastern Baltimore County marketplace.
Also unveiled at the ceremony was a scale model of the new signs that designate MD-43 "The Korean War and Korea Service Veterans Memorial Highway." In 2001, then Delegate Klausmeier was the sponsor of the original legislation that designated MD-43 as the Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway. This year, at the request of the KWVA, Senator Klausmeier submitted a request to the Maryland Transportation Commission to alter the designation of the highway to include those military personnel who have served on the Korean Peninsula since the cease-fire in 1953. Senator Klausmeier has also been instrumental in obtaining funding, both public and private, to construct these new fitting tributes to the brave men and women whom have protected the freedom of the South Korean people against Communist North Korea and it allies.
"The Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) is grateful to Senator Klausmeier and her staff for their hard work and dedication to honoring my fellow Korean War Veterans. Senator Klausmeier has been one of our biggest advocates in Annapolis and we look for to continuing this successful partnership," added Ray Glock, Honor Guard Captain of the KWVA’s Maryland Chapter, who led his group during the day’s festivities.
"I constantly hear that the Korean War is America’s forgotten war. I have made it my goal to change that attitude, at least here in Maryland. I have and will continue to do everything in my power to honor these brave service personnel who have given so much to the American and Korean people," said Senator Klausmeier.
The new signs are scheduled for completion in the late spring of 2007. A separate ceremony will be held for the dedication of the signs.
Photos of the event and of the model of the sign are available upon request.
